Additional Experience

Culminated below are some of the community organizations that I have had the privilege of working with. Each has provided me with invaluable experience that has shaped my approach when it comes to taking on a challenge.

VHIO

Volunteer Health Interpreter Organization

VHIO is a student-led organization at UC Berkeley that provides medical interpretations and volunteering services to clinics, medical panelists, university-affiliated groups, community centers, and health organizations in the San Francisco Bay area. My role started as a volunteer interpreter where we trained on medical terminology, ethical principles, and our responsibilities in healthcare settings. As a volunteer, I was able to interpret for organizations such as Breathmobile, Operation Access, Sutter Health, among many other great clinics. In my second year involved I was voted to become the coordinator for the Spanish Department, where my new responsibilities included being the prime point of communicating for clinics, coordinating a team of 40 volunteers, and designing team activities to maintain engagement.

BASIS

Bay Area Scientists Inspiring Students

BASIS is a Community Resource for Science (CRS) program that provides free in-class science lessons to elementary school students. Through one-hour lessons directly in classrooms, we engaged students in hands-on investigations and STEM challenges that aligned with their learning styles. As the team leader, I organized the lesson plan and coordinated meetings with my team where we strategized our teaching approaches.

Bridging Berkeley

Bridging Berkeley is a mentoring program that matches UC Berkeley students with Berkeley middle school youth, especially those who will be first-generation college students. As a mentor, my role was to help middle school students transition to online learning and help foster critical thinking as well as problem-solving skills. This involved designing weekly learning plans, adapting teaching methods to meet each individual's needs, and incorporating skills to foster students' holistic growth and development.
